Mitraniketan, located in the hills of Vagamon, Kerala, was born from a belief that healthcare should reach the hills, the plantations, and the people forgotten by the plains.Guided by the vision of Laurie Baker and Elizabeth Baker, and later carried forward by Dr.Hildegard Sona and Nurse Alina Cattani, the hospital became a lifeline for remote communities across Idukki and Kottayam.
In a time when no medical care was available for miles, Mitraniketan served as a place of healing, human connection, and dignity. Beyond treating illness, it empowered women, trained nurses, and built generations of caregivers who would return to serve their own people.
The hospital was also built with locally available materials, climatic sensitivity, and respecting the users. A design not to form alone, but to people, climate, and purpose.
