Streetscape as a village plan representation: Shreya Udupa

Mattur is a small village, 6 kms away from the main city of Shivamogga, well known for conserving and also restoring the identity of one of the very old languages in India, ‘Sanskrit.’ The village has developed around a small agrahara which is a brahminical settlement that grows around a temple. In order to find the reason for the system of the agrahara as it is today, the project aimed at taking a look at the Sanskrit learning pattern of the village which happens in schools and informal spaces like the jagali kattes, riverbanks and verandahs of houses.

What is shown in the drawing is the street elevations imposed on the plan of the agrahara. To understand the synchrony of the streets and the houses – 9m wide paved roads and the jagali kattes just beside them which continue into the verandahs.
