Section through Bar Grumps, Goa: Studio Praia

Grumps is a contemporary bar set in the backyard of a 100 year old Goan house, and our modest attempt at paying homage to the old tavernas of Goa.

We restructured an existing outhouse, firewood storage room and the open space in between to comprise an indoor-outdoor bar that feels modest, familiar, cozy and comfortable.

The main bar room is an envelope of all things Goa – right from the choice of materials, to the dim vintage light fixtures, the old plates on the walls and the antique hardware on the doors. We opened up the wall of the bar facing the garden with large windows and doors to blur the lines between the inside and outside and carefully added a verandah on to the old structure. An old firewood store room at the far end now serves as a secondary bar and a newly constructed covered seating area connects the two older structures. The garden space in between is meant to be an extension of the bar itself. The space comes alive with the trees and plants and a palette of natural and handmade materials like cement oxide, terrazzo, kota, teak wood and laterite.
