Reviving the Lifeline of Srinagar: A Holistic Vision for the Dal Lake Precinct: StudioPOD

In 2017, StudioPOD was commissioned by the Office of the Transport Advisor, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, to conduct a mobility study on the proposed widening of the road along the Dal Lake in Srinagar. However, as we delved deeper into the project, our engagement with the city and its stakeholders revealed a more complex and nuanced narrative.

Through multiple site visits, interactions with locals, and a review of historical literature, we discovered an intricate network of waterways that had been an integral part of Srinagar’s evolution. Over time, the city’s focus had shifted from its historic water network to roadways, relegating the waterways to mostly recreational use. This shift has resulted in a disconnect between the water and its stakeholders, as well as a decline in the public realm around the lake.

Our observations broadened the scope of our project, leading us to create a vision plan for the Dal Lake Precinct. Our plan aims to:
1. Revive the Water Network: Introduce new modes of public transit, reduce dependency on motorways, and integrate all modes of transit with cycling and pedestrian routes.
2. Create a Vibrant Public Realm: Restore the connection between people, important sites, and the lake, making the public realm accessible and inclusive.

By adopting this holistic approach, we envisioned a revitalised Dal Lake Precinct that not only preserves its cultural heritage but also fosters a sustainable and resilient future for the city of Srinagar.
