Reviving Abandoned Place: Government of Gujarat Poultry Farm: Siddharth Korat

The thesis proposal is to revitalise abandoned spaces or buildings in the city and make them usable again. Some of the values get diluted with changes in time and milieu. Now there is a possibility to revive buildings for current needs while conserving the continuity of their significance.

The proposal suggests the adaptive reuse and revival of defunct poultry farms into a Center for Environmental Education (CEE) by analysing the rationale for the intervention, understanding the architectural features on-site, and the needs of the city and its people.

The design focuses on preserving the existing trees and the footprint of the current buildings while making it easy for visitors to move around. The plan takes into account the different types of people who will visit, from officials to local farmers. Key principles of simple living are applied through features like courtyards and semi-open corridors, which act as both pathways and transition spaces. Raised platforms (plinths) are placed at intervals to provide resting points along the way.

The two building clusters emphasise how people will use the central open areas at different times of the day. For example, shaded spaces under trees in the central court make the area comfortable and livable. Open corners provide continuous visual connections, and the architecture is kept modest by reusing materials from the existing buildings and incorporating sloped roofs.
