A study conducted in the densely populated neighborhoods of Mumbai sought to delve into the concept of ‘home.’ Its objective was to unravel how individuals in culturally and economically vibrant communities craft their sense of home and how these personal notions intertwine to form a collective neighborhood identity. Thakkarbappa Colony in Mumbai emerged as one such neighborhood under scrutiny, predominantly inhabited by migrants who relocated during a partition and adopted the craft of shoe making. A plethora of narratives were gathered from the locale and its inhabitants, ranging from recollections of their origins to communal conflicts, and from tales of economic hardships to strategic maneuvers for survival.
